Your thoughts and Self Talk determine how you overcome challenges

If you started the year with amazing goals and intentions and have recently been challenged to keep going with them, then take a minute to reflect on the power of your Self Talk.

In my experience many people feel a dip in there goal enthusiasm around 6 weeks into the New Year, so you are not alone!

If we are honest with ourselves, we all have experienced the little voice in our head which talks us easily out of so many opportunities arising from coincidences.

It makes comments like:

“Take the easy option , play it safe mate!”

Don’t say anything, keep quiet, no-one will listen to you in the office meeting”

“Who are you kidding, you could never do that!”

“Let someone else do it”

“Just stay here, don’t approach that person, they’re far to good for you!”

Can you imagine how many relationships that never had a chance to start because of this last phrase in our self talk examples.

Lets commit to thinking about what we do want instead of what we do not want, focus on success, overcome the fear of failure.

To help you do this exercise in a quiet moment at home.

Your thoughts and speech reflect your attitude.

So work to adjust your thoughts and language to positive only.

Exercise: List 7 negative words you use, and then write next to it 7 positive alternative words or phrases you could use.

Then next time you are about to use one of the 7 negative words, remember this exercise in your mind and change it to a positive.

At first it may seem awkward but with practise you become expert at being positive as you begin to rewire your thinking from default mode to postive.

Imagine working your brain muscle and become the more positive energetic person you want to be in business and your personal life. Imagine people commenting on how you are always so positive? How do you do it?

Challenge yourself, to change your Self talk.

It Just Works!

At MindStore we are passionate about helping everyone to rekindle that way of thinking to improve performance from Ordinary to Extraordinary,so think about contacting us to be involved in your next Learning and Development event.

Why WHY is the most important Question!

Discover your WHY at Mindstore.

When we take time to think about about our Goals, about what we would like to be do and have, many times questions pop into our mind. That little inner voice we all have even if you do not admit to it.

Often its HOW:

How are you going to do that?

How are you going to achieve this?

How can you afford this?

How can this possibly work?

Sound familiar? Can you hear the negative tone your inner voice has when you read these words out? Its so familiar for us all. Often those we have the confidence to share our goals with will ask us the same question without thinking.

And we start to wonderdoubt and fear takes over. We think, maybe my inner voice is right? maybe my friends are correct? am I being silly thinking big like this? maybe I should just set a smaller, manageable, reachable goal…….

Well STOP , because one of the secrets of extraordinary successful people is that they do not ask the question HOW? They thought differently and replaced it with WHY?

In the begining most of them when they set out their huge goals, like Mandela, Branson, Jobs, Obama… they did not know HOW, but they knew WHY.

Why do this?

Why this will help my business?

Why this will benefit my family?

Why sacrifice my evenings for this goal?

Why will this benefit my country?

Why is it best for all?

Why our customers will buy it?

Why Why Why Why… That is the Question to ask!

And that’s the question that inspired them, gave them a passion for the goal and a reason to overcome any challenges until it was achieved.

So today, do not ask HOW ask WHY then you will be thinking differently like extraordinary people. And you will be AWESOME.

This is another simple concept that people often find challenging to begin with. Mainly because it requires a change of thinking, attitude and mindset.

Many of us adults, if we are honest, are used to thinking small, safe, keeping within our comfort zones.  Kids however automatically Think Big. My youngest son IS going to be an airline pilot for Jetstar.

His positive attitude causes him not to think about the challenges he faces to achieve this big goal. He absolutely sees all the positive of achieving this goal, he can see clearly his WHY, he does not give any negative thoughts to HOW. His WHY is so he can fly Mum and Dad around Australia! Do you think I will encourage this goal or poo- hoo and dismiss it?

Another little boy told his dad when he was aged 5 that he wanted to be a Formula One driver when he grew up. His dad backed him and helped him with his WHY, his dad did not ask the negative HOW question which crushes so many goals and aspirations. The boys name is Lewis Hamilton, a World champion Formula 1 driver.

If you would like some more details our MindStore Goal setting planner is available with our compliments. Simply email us your postal address to: enquires@mindstoreaustralia.com and we would be delighted to send one out to you.

Then you will know….. IT JUST WORKS!

Resilience and Positivity Fiji Style

Bula! and welcome
 fiji snorkelling

How many of us think that the best way to take time out and relax is to go on holiday?

Why then do so many of us get so stressed out while on holiday? Then come back feeling that we need a holiday to get over the holiday and to catch up with the mountain of work on our return.

This month we discuss Culture, specifically the Fijian Culture around Resilience, the use of Positive language and Thinking.

Vinaka!

Damian and the team at MindStore Australia.

Fiji time !
If you were to take time to think about whats the biggest challenge in both your professional and personal life what would it be?

The clue is in the question.

For many  people I speak with its the inability to take time. Time to think.

There is much spoken, tweeted, and presented about Resilience and Postitivity.

During a family trip last year to Fiji. I was shown amazing examples of living the above. If you have been yourself you wil know exactly what I mean.

Our hotel transfer taxi arrived in “Fiji time”. When the driver felt it was the right time. And if you stay long enough you apparently tune in and will “just know” when it will arrive. Talk about intuitive thinking.

Fijian people have an attitude and a pace which is thoughtful relaxed and peaceful.

We arrive with our pre-planned excel spreadsheet schedule. Planned to maximise our vacation. Stressing on the first morning that the restaurant wasn’t open at 7 am for breakfast when it should be, which made us stress about missing the dive boat, which stressed us about being late to pick the boys us from kindy!!! What kind of holiday is this we think!

However we soon adapt the Fijian attitude and rythmn. The next day we wait outside for the restaurant to open watching the turtles, the dive boat leaves when everyone is ready and the children had a great time and didnt want to leave.

During our trip I became more of a human being, as opposed to a human doing.

Making time to stop; to watch the sunset; being at peace; being present; being around for family.

Resilience:

One morning I asked Kitty the cook how she coped with the recent storms which caused severe damage to her village and her home. She paused, smiled widely and said, “Its Ok, I will start again”

Thats Resilience. She had no insurance, no family to help her, and little government support.

Positive talk:

Fijian people talk, think and act positively, naturally without attending training courses or seminars. It is part of their culture handed down from generation to generation.

If its a cloudy day, visitors say “its such an terribly cloudy day, looks like we will get rain today, I bet its sunny back in Brisbane”

Fijians say “the sun been lazy today, the rain is good for our crops”

You might be thinking, what is the point in the story above:

1. The point is that we don’t need to go overseas on holiday to see a sunset. The sun sets at home over the trees, hills or buildings (every evening).

2. Challenge yourself to take the time out, once this week, to sit for 10 minutes and watch the sun disappear and the clouds change colours.

3. When doing this think about your day, think about how you are going to spend your evening. Then go into your evening refreshed from that 10 minute time out.

4. Next time you are aware of saying something negative about the weather or more importantly your family or work collegues. Think of the Fijians and use a positive alternative. It takes practise, and will make all the difference in your communication with people.

Everyone needs time to review, to reassess and to reflect. Make time to think. You will see the benefits including better clarity in thinking and decision making.

Practise accessing your thinking for improved quality time to recharge, to review your day, to see that you did the best you could, to reassess your next day and reflect on how you could think, listen and act with greater clarity to achieve more.

So in the spirit of Fiji, I am relaxed that Septembers newsletter is just going out in the middle of the month and not the 1st business day. Does it matter?

Vinaka for taking time to read this and keep smiling.
